چکیده

By ALEXANDER S. WIENER, M.D., F.A.C.P., RAFFAELE NAPPI, M.D. AND EVE B. GORDON I N THE PRECEDING PAPER’ our methods for performing Rh antibody titrations were described in detail, with special reference to the precautions taken to insure objective and reproducible results. Using these technics, it was shown that pregnancies with Rh-negative fetuses and the birth of Rh-negative babies have no significant effect on the Rh antibody titer of sensitized Rh-negative mothers. This paper is a continuation of these studies on Rh sensitization and will present the results of observations on the effect of pregnancies with Rhpositive fetuses and birth of Rh-positive babies on the maternal Rh antibody titer. As will be pointed out, these findings have important implications with regard to the frequency with which pregnant Rh-negative women are apt to be-

Factors Influencing the Immunization of Rh - negative Mothers

According to Nevanlinna and Vainio (1962) the probability that an Rh-negative mother who has had two Rh-positive children will be immunized is 4-5%. In the third and later births the probability of immunization decreases rapidly. The reason why most mothers do not become immunized is intriguing. It may depend on individual differences in immunological reactivity, and perhaps the response of som...

Hemolytic Events in Rh Positive Neonates Born to Rh Negative Mothers

Background One of the most important cause of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is hemolysis including Rh incompatibility.  The aim of this study was to assess the rate of hyperbilirubinemia due to hemolysis in Rh positive neonates  born to Rh negative mothers. Methods In this retrospective study from March 1998 to February 2003, 60 icteric Rh positive newborns that were born to Rh negative m...

The Half-life of Passively Acquired Antibody Globulin Molecules in Infants

By following the titer of passively acquired Rh antibodies in newborn infants, it is calculated that the half-life of the placenta-passing Rh antibody molecule is approximately 30 days. Evidence is offered that this estimate applies not only to placenta-passing Rh antibodies, but also to other placenta-passing antibodies, and not improbably to serum gamma globulin molecules in general. Studies ...

Significance of Rh-sensitization during pregnancy: its relation to a preventive programme.

A study of the incidence of Rh-sensitization showed a 6.5% incidence of anti-D appearing for the first time during the last trimester of pregnancy. In 24 of the 29 subjects these antibodies were weak, and were found only when a sensitive technique using enzyme-treated Rh-deletion test cells was employed. The remaining five, however, had high-titre antibodies, which were associated with a positi...

Studies in Rh sensitization. VI. A-B-O blood groups and Rh subtypes in sensitized and nonsensitized Rh negative pregnant women.

S LEVINE’ has pointed out, A-B-O incompatibility is less frequent in families with erythroblastotic children due to Rh sensitization than in the general population. That is, an Rh negative mother is less likely to become sensitized to the Rh factor if her Rh positive fetus possesses either the A or B agglutinogen when the corresponding agglutinogen is absent from her own red cells. Wiener2 has ...
